I have smart mailboxes on my Mac and they work fine. My investment related email and my fishing club email go into the correct mailboxes leaving my main mailbox free from that stuff. But on my phone and iPad I get all my emails in the main mailbox. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance for your help

It really depends on your email system. Is it iCloud? Gmail? Corporate servers? Something else?
Smart mailboxes are a feature of Mac Mail, the Mac email client. I don't believe they appear on iOS devices. But you can do the same thing with many email servers. Like most things with email, it is better to do it on your server where the email is really stored, and handled, than in the client.
For instance, with Gmail, you can set up labels and rules and have your email appear in different mailboxes according to criteria. You would do this with the Gmail web interface, and then can set up those labels to appear as mailboxes on your Mac or iOS. You can do something similar with iCloud email in the web interface there too.
Thanks. I am running Gmail under the iOS Mail app. I assume I would have to move out from under the Mail app to do this. Is that correct?
Gene: No. You can set up labels in the Gmail web interface. Set up the rules there too. You can then go into settings to make sure those labels are included in IMAP (maybe they are by default). Then you should get those labels as mailboxes in the regular Mail app.
