Is there a way to manage app icon placement on my iphone similar to the way it used to be done in itunes from my Mac computer? Using the finger press and slide method is cumbersome and buggy, especially if you have several apps to manage. Even a third app would be acceptable! This is driving me crazy!

Doing it on your iPhone directly is the only way. But you don't have to do it one at a time. You can drag several at a time to make it much easier. I have a video on this here: Arranging Apps on Your iPad or iPhone.
