How Does Time Machine Backup When HD Not Connected?

I am new to time machine, I did a backup of my mbp on an external hd and I am able to enter time machine and view backup even if the hd is not connected,so where is the back up getting saved?

Sounds like you are accessing it via Local Snapshots. This is when Time Machine saves the backup temporarily to the empty space on your drive until it can then copy it to your external drive the next time it is connected.
