You can”f. You can only add a hyperlink to text. I think this is because adding hyperlinks is really only useful if you are exporting to ePub or PDF formats, and I don’t think ePub supports image links. At least I’ve never seen it. Perhaps it is more a matter of many ePub readers not supporting that. PDF may be similar. I wouldn’t be surprised if some PDF readers supported it and some didn’t, but I haven’t investigated it.

So, depending on what you are doing, you could maybe include a caption for the image and make the caption a hyperlink.

Seems to me like a very basic feature that should be included in Pages. I've used this feature in Microsoft Word, and the hyperlinks are functional when exported to PDF. Thanks for your feedback!

If I understand the OP's question, I agree that hyperlinking images can be useful. I like to keep my file size as small as possible; photos can add a lot to a document's file size. I haven't tried this lately, but In Microsoft Word, I have inserted a photo as a hyperlink. The photo displays (if I want), but Word simply pulls the data from where the photo resides. The photo adds virtually nothing to the document size. I don't know how well this technique works with cloud computing.
