Do I need a vpn? I’ve heard about them but wonder if I need one to run my computers and mobile devices and HomeKit just in my own home.

No, not for inside your own home. They are more for when you are using an Internet connection you don't trust, like at a cafe, conference center, hotel, etc. Even then, you probably don't need it unless you have a good reason, like you are working for a company or government and need to meet high security standards.
