Absolutely. Mac OS X upgrades (and Windows upgrades, for that matter) won't erase other data on your drive. They just replace there System files. So applications, documents, video, music, photos, etc., will all remain untouched.
You certainly can do a "erase the drive and install" for Mac or Windows, but it isn't required and it isn't the usual way to do it on either system.

Following what seemed to be sensible advice, I created a partition for Lion (20MB on MBP) and the install went flawlessly. Not being the LEAST BIT knowledgeable about partitions, however, I now find that I have two separate 'computers', accessible through the option key at startup. How should I handle this? [I LOVE Lion... all thirty minute's-worth of playing with it!] Should I create my own Lion disk at this point? (for iMac install?)Hmmm, seems to be about four questions here... THANKS, GARY,

That's a tough one. I would delete that new Lion partition. Then upgrade your main partition to Lion. Partitioning a MBP into two parts like this is great for tech journalists and developers (like me) but not suitable for everyday use.
If you have a decent net connection, don't bother creating your own Lion disc. Just install as normal from the Mac App Store. So many people stressing over creating a Lion install disc... just not something that most people need.

Thanks Gary, I did just that. I created a DVD with Lion on it so I can install/re-install as needed (which has been never with any versions with my iMac and MBP)
