Air Drop Functionality

Gary, I used to think my Air Drop function did not work until I discovered that both Macs had to be in “Air Drop” in finder in order for the Macs to see one another. Is this the normal behavior of Air Drop? And if so curious as to why? It seems that a more useful function would be someone to send a file even if the Air Drop is not open in finder for another Mac to discover/send a file. What are your thoughts?

Yes, I believe so. Think about it, if it worked without the receiver being ready to receive, then it could be abused. You walk into a coffee shop, log on to their wifi, and then next thing you know you are getting tons of files sent to you.
Also, if you were always in receive mode, think of how much work your MacBook would need to do to constantly check the network for files being sent to it. A big waste as even someone that uses Air Drop often is still probably NOT using it 99.9% of the time.
