Forum Question: Apple TV problems syncing with Itunes

My brother in law contacted me after buying an Apple TV and said it won’t sync with Itunes. It does connect to his wireless network with no issues, he can view movie trailers, etc while connected to Itunes through the Apple TV, but when he tries to get Itunes to recognize his Apple TV through Itunes, it won’t work; it won’t show it as a device. I’ve made sure everything is on the same and only wireless network, so that’s not the problem, I’ve made sure he’s signed in to Itunes on both his PC and the Apple TV; but no luck. He has a Mcafee security suite with a firewall and I think that may be the problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    I would suspect that fire all too. Try turining it off.

    Hey yea firewall may an issue. Make sure the Apple Tv is up to date on software(apple supposed to have fixed this issue in software update) also try doing a reset by pressing menu and down arrow same time or unplug and plug back. Apple uses a technology called Bonjour so apple products can talk to other apple products and that comes with iTunes installed on your PC. But I believe firewalls and anti virus software may disable it. Also check to see if the port for apple Tv is open. Maybe Gary can help you on that one. Not sure the port number for apple tv

      Thanks Michael for your reply. As you mentioned, I do not know how to check if a port is open. That would be something I could use some guidance on. He did check the apple tv for an update and it was up to date, but that didn’t help any. I’ve tried to get him to shut down the firewall, but we haven’t figured that one out yet. Thanks again for your help.
