We’ve been getting this error message quite a lot lately while trying to access movies on our Mac Mini. We’ve done some homework and found some temp fixes (holding down arrow and menu to reset the ATV) that worked once. Recently while experiencing the problem, I tried starting the movie from the Mac Mini, then sending it to ATV and it worked! My question is, why does this error occur, and is there a REAL fix? Also, I am willing to spend another $100 for a new ATV2 if it turns out I have a bum unit. Still love the darn thing!

I've seen that too, but not recently.
I don't think it has anything to do with the Apple TV unit. It has to do with your connection -- well any point between your house and the Apple servers. There are lots of points along the way. Very hard to diagnose and probably impossible to "fix." You just have to hope that whatever point along the Internet is failing you, that it gets fixed evetually.
One thing you can try is to change your DNS service in your router or modem. That will most likely mean a different route for your data between home and Apple.
