AVCHD archive needed help…

I have a 13GB AVCHD folder and want to archive it. I have saved to my external drive for now. I been trying to archive with Toast, will not archive on DVD-R, Toast is telling me it’s not Blue Rey disk. Now the problem I am running into is that my new imac will not read blue rey disk. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I don’t have a problem archive under 4.2 gb on a DVD-R it’s just when it’s over 4.2 GB and toast does ask for more disk to complete the 13GB archive.

Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs. But it does not have a drive that burns Blu-ray. You have to set Toast to make a DVD (a data DVD, not a video one) and limit the size of what you want to burn to the size of a DVD. In your case, you would have to put some of your files on one disk, and some on another. If you plan on doing this often, perhaps just use an external drive instead and just copy files there to archive. I've moved away from using optical discs and I only use external hard drives now to archive files. Drives are cheaper and faster.

Okay, than how would I know if a drive is going bad in the future and once it's filled than what's left to do.

Same answer as for DVDs. You don't know when a DVD is going bad and you go to another DVD when you fill the first. If the data is critical to you -- then you should have more than one copy. If it is just an archive of something you may or may not need later, then you may decide one copy is enough.
