Can an iPad Now Replace a MacBook?

Gary, After the release of iPad OS do you think the iPad can replace the MacBook as your only computer. What can the MacBook do that the iPad can’t ? Interested to hear your thoughts.

It is a sliding scale. For some people, the iPad could replace a computer back in 2010 when it first came out. With each version of the operating system and hardware it grows more powerful and more people can use it as a replacement. Another issue is whether it replaces your computer entirely, or just your portable computer. Some people may like it as a laptop replacement, knowing they have a desktop computer to fall back on.

What the iPad still can do is many forms of development. You can't run development environments like Xcode and such on it. Video editing is also a stretch at the pro level, with apps like Final Cut and Premiere being only on the desktop. These things also usually call for large screens and multiple screens. I'm sure there are many business, engineering and science tasks where the software is only available on a computer and even if there was an app for it having a single 12.9-inch screen wouldn't be the best way to get work done.

So it is very subjective. For many the iPad can replace a MacBook, yes. But for others it will continue to just compliment it.

I have been using my iPad Pro since it came out instead of my MacBook and am very comfortable using it continuously. I have not used my MacBook at all and do not miss it.

I would love to use my iPad Pro exclusively, but that won’t happen until I can connect an EHD to it because the storage space on the Pro will never be enough for me even if I get the 1 TB model.

I use my “old” iPad Air for everything until I have to go to the iMac as the iPad can not do everything...
