Can I Have Two External Time Machine Drives On My iMac?

I am concerned about my Time Machine drive failing, so would like to keep one drive off site, alternating each week. Can I have two external Time Machine drives operating in tandem on my iMac (Catalina)?

Yes. Just set each one up. It will back up to the one that is connected. Swap them out just like you want. A lot of people do this with one drive at work and another at home too.

Is there a way to free up storage space on a Time Machine drive that is "full"? Rather than connect my older TM to use as a second drive, can I free up space on the current drive (3 T)? There is no "file" or older backup to delete!

Martha: It is very important that you don't try to access anything directly on the Time Machine drive. It is very easy to corrupt a backup and have to start all over again by doing that. You don't need to do anything to "free up space" with Time Machine, it takes care of itself. If it runs out of space, it removes older versions of files (always keeping the most recent, at least).
