Forum Question: Can I Open JPG Files That Are Over 8MB On My iMac?

I have an iMac with a 3.4 GHx Intel Core i7, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB Graphics, running Sierra ver 10.12.6
I can’t open any of my jpg files that are over 8MB using Preview, Photos, Fotor Photo Editor, or Pixelmator. Everything under that size opens perfectly. Is there any way of reducing the size of these files without having to open them first?

When you say “I can’t open” what do you mean? Is there an error message? What happens, exactly? On my MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM I was able to open a 45MB jpg image with no problem. But not all image files are the same — there are variations on the JPG format and perhaps these files are also different in some other way beside their size?

    Hi Mike,

Curious, have you done a shut down & reboot recently? If not, might I suggest giving it a shot before getting carried away with more complex troubleshooting… a good rule of thumb is always check the simple stuff first.

    Good luck!

    This pop-up appears.
The file “Name.jpg” could not be opened. It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize. (or Photos or Pixelmator or Fotor Photo Editor)

Mike: My guess is that it doesn’t have to do with the 8MB size, but something else about the format.
