Can I Update a Software Program In the App Store That I Downloaded Somewhere Else?

I occasionally use a program called Business Card Composer which I downloaded from the company’s website. Last night, I found out the program is also sold in the Mac App Store. Is there a way for me to do my updates for that program via the App Store even thought I DL it from the company’s website and not Apple’s?
Thanks for your help.

The short answer is: no. There's no way to link the old app with the version in the Mac app store. It isn't the developer's fault, Apple simply hasn't worked out a way for that to happen. There are a lot of technical and business hurdles there.
Your best bet is to just continue to update the software as you did before. On the plus side, the developer can get updates to you much faster outside of the app store, so you may find that as an advantage. And if they did things right there may even be an automatic update feature inside the app itself, making things easy.
Some app developers offer a discount or free way to get the app store app for owners of the non-app store app. But this is also difficult for developers to do, so I wouldn't expect it. It takes manual effort and can only be done a limited number of times. But it might be worth contacting them and asking to see what they say.

Thanks for the info. I'll reach out to the company and see what they say. If they offer an App Store solution, I'll post the details here.
