Forum Question: Can You Set Birthday Alerts In iCal?

No feature for setting alerts for birthdays in iCal?
Do I need to make new calendar called birthdays ? Right now birthdays are entered with the contacts info in my contacts.

No, I don’t think you can do this. The birthdays calendar is a special thing where it takes the birthdays from your Address Book and puts them in a calendar in iCal so you can see them. But there are no further options like alerts.
You could create your own separate birthdays calendar by exporting that special one and importing it into a new calendar. Then you can set alerts for each. But you’ll also have to remember to add new birthdays to both Address Book and this new calendar.

Gary I found something for the birthday calendar. Perhaps you could make a video on it.

Lion’s iCal has birthday alerts now. All we do is enter the person’s birthday in Contacts address book of the mac. That will create an event and by default it will set an 8am alarm alert !

In preferences on iCal on the mac we we need to uncheck the ignore all alerts check box ! And once iCloud syncs this across devices, we’ll get an alert on the person’s birthday.

      Pretty cool !

Well, I like the alert, but by default all birthdays in my address book notify me at 8:00 a.m. with the Basso sound.
What if I want to globally change the default for ALL the birthdays in my address book to 7:00 a.m. and with the Ping sound?
Must be a way to change this somehow. Would make a great MacMost tutorial.

Just a simple setting. Go into iCal preferences. Change the “Day starts at” preference to any time you want. The alarms for things like birthdays go off at that time.

I wish they would allow custom birthday alerts. I like 2 alerts…a week before, so I can buy and send a card and an alert the day of the birthday.

Hopefully Mountain Lion will fix this.
