Capture a Short Section Of a Personal DVD?

I have a DVD that is a personal DVD and I would like to capture a short 3 minute part of it and transfer it to a DVD. I have thrown out the original from my video recorder and my movie back-ups and have NO video of my desired clip available to me. I goofed!

Is there a program available to capture the video I want? I have tried QuickTime Player and it does not work for me. Your video “Recording Your Screen” using Quicktime Player does not do what I want to do. I may not be following your directions correctly.

My captured screen turns grey!?

Thank you

The app you want is called Handbrake. You can use that to convert your DVD back to a digital video. I did an episode on this a while back: http://macmost.com/importing-dvd-video.html.
Keep in mind that the video will probably not be the same quality as you originally had it. DVDs are standard definition (720x480) whereas most video recorded today even on a cheap smart phone is HD (1280x720 or 1920x1080). But at least you can get it.
One you use Handbrake to extract the video and create a standard video file, you can then bring it into QuickTime Player or iMovie to trim it.
