I am trying to find a definitive answer to: Do the carriers (ATT and Verizon) charge an activation fee (or reactivation fee if you reconnect) for prepaid 3G service? I cannot get a single answer from the Customer Service Reps for either carrier…some say yes, some say no. It would be great to hear from you or anyone who has had actual experience with this.

I've never had to deal with AT&T or Verizon with pre-paid iPhone accounts. I don't think they exist -- do they? Last time I checked you needed to get a standard account. They simply didn't offer pre-paid ones for iPhone service. Maybe that's why you can't get a straight answer.
You could always go into one of their stores and have them walk you through the process to figure it out.
Clarification: I was referring to iPad not iPhone. Specifically the "prepaid" 3g service you purchase from your iPad.
Ah, I see. No, I believe there are no hidden costs when you activate a month of 3G service. I'd imagine there would be people complaining left and right about it if they did otherwise.
I'd also imagine that they would say so on the purchase screen on the iPad just before you bought. They'd have to tell you how much it was going to cost and be upfront about any extra fees like that. They can't just say it will cost $30 and then charge you $30+$18 or something.
