Continue To Use the Apple TV 1st Generation?

I have not been able to use the Apple TV for a good part of the year. My husband uses it because he doesn’t use a computer. So I upload videos from iTunes and Youtube to it for him to watch. I also put our family movies on there to watch when other family members come for a visit. I know iTunes no longer recognizes the Apple TV but I would still like to put our personal videos on there. How can I do this? I do not want the new Apple TV because we are a family that does not watch TV and screen anything that comes in the house. The new Apple TV has all those previews that you have to see when you first turn it on. There is no getting around the inappropriate content, the kids see the pictures. Some are sexual, some are very scary so we do not want that in our home.
Any help still using this, or even another that would work with our mac and be able to play on the tv?
Thanks

First, I wouldn't rule out getting a new Apple TV. There are settings for parental restrictions that could do everything you want. See https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT200198.

Furthermore, as a heavy Apple TV user, I can see how it should be easy to configure your Apple TV to only stream things you want. For one, it is an apps-based system, so you could just remove the apps (or not install them in the first place) that you don't want. Then you can install some that you may be missing out on now -- like educational and children's programming apps.

I'm not sure what you mean by "all those previews that you have to see when you first turn it on." I just see a list of app icons. I'm not forced to watch any previews.

But if you want to stick with your old Apple TV, then I don't think you'll have a problem. You've probably seen news about it, but that is about the iTunes Store. It doesn't sound like you are using that, so it may not affect you.
