Do I Have To Store iOS Apps In iTunes On My Mac?

iTunes keeps a copy of all my iOS apps on my Mac. Is that necessary?

No, it isn't. You don't need to back up apps because in the event your iPhone fails, you can just re-download all apps from the App Store. No need to back them up, because Apple already has them. No need to deal with iTunes on your Mac at all when it comes to apps anymore.
Is iTunes on you Mac still copying them from your iPhone when you sync? I was sure that it no longer did that. If so, what version of iOS and macOS are you using? iTunes?
In iTunes, Preferences, Downloads, do you still have "Apps" checked under Automatic Downloads?
