I have a Keynote presentation that contains many images. Right now, I have the images saved in a folder, from which I drag them and drop them into the presentation. My question is this: once I’ve added them to the presentation, do I need to keep a copy of them in the folder or is it sufficient to just keep a copy of the presentation?

That's up to you. The presentation doesn't need them. They aren't "linked" media or anything like that. But if those are your only copies of those files, best practice is that you may want to keep them around for future use or backup.
