I just upgraded my iPhone4 and iPad2 to iOS5. I was somewhat surprised to see it used 4gb & 7gb of free space on the 4 and 2 respectively. Is this to be expected, or did I have bad installs? This is the 1st iOS upgrade that used a large amount of my devices free space, let alone approx 25% of the devices total formatted capacity. Thak in advance for your help…

How are you measuring this?
When you connect to your computer and view the space usage in iTunes, what does it say there? You should see a chart with the details of what your space is used for.
I'm measuring it in iTunes, with the chart. Says I'm using 4gb & 7 gb of "Other" (yellow bar), and that my remaining free space is reduced by that amount.
OK, so 4GB and 7GB of "Other." That makes it a lot clearer. "Other" can be a lot of things and there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer to what goes in there. A lot of people suggest doing a backup/restore to get that space back. But I think it will eventually be reclaimed automatically, maybe. So unless you are having a problem now I would let it go for a bit and see what happens.
Gary, thanks much. I'll take your advice and let it go for awhile. Had you heard of this happening prior to my post?
I've heard of people having space used up by "other" but that has been a thing since the first iPhone, not new to iOS 5.
Thanks. The really interesting thing to me is that "other" uses approximately 80-85% of the amount of space used by the sum of all my apps and content on both devices.
