Gmail contacts in apple mail

Gary I use apple mail for my gmail. But when I compose a new message, the contacts in gmail don’t show up and unless I know the email address; I’m
Compelled to go to gmail web mail and find the address.
If I import the addresses in my Address book of the iMac, they will sync with my iPhone which I don’t want.
Any tips?

So the only real problem is that if you import the addresses from gmail to Address Book on your Mac, then they will sync with the iPhone and you don't want them on your iPhone?
Why not. What's the problem with having them on your iPhone too?
If you really don't want them, then just turn off Sync Address Book Contacts in iTunes for that iPhone's sync settings.
Or, if you want to sync just a few of them then assign those to a group and set it to sync only that group.
Or, check out the sync settings for the iPhone. There are a lot of options that allow you to manage what gets synced from Address Book and what doesn't.

Can I set gmail on iMac through exchange like we can on the iPhone ? That way just typing a few characters of a name in the new message TO box would display the email address that is stored in the gmail account !

Set gmail through Exchange? Why do it that way? Seems like that might cause trouble. Just use Gmail through IMAP. I'm not sure of the "typing a few characters" functionality -- that must mean that it is syncing the addresses somehow. But if you select to sync the contacts, then you'd have that too.
