Going from iLife 04 to iLife 11 in one go – advice?

I am about to migrate from my beloved (but slowly dying) 12 inch G4 Powerbook to a just-ordered 13 inch MacBook Pro. I have iLife ’04 on the PB and the new machine should come with iLife 11. Any words of advice for upgrading the iPhoto library and iMovie projects with the least amount of pain? Or will I even be able to do it without starting over importing photos and with the raw source video for the movies?

P.S. I found MacMost via the recommendation on AskLeo. (We are a cross-platform household and also know Leo from our common interest in corgis.)

You should be able to do it, but I haven't heard of anyone going all the way from 04 to 11. Normally, I would say -- back it up and then give it a try. But in your case you will be moving to a new machine anyway. So your old machine will act as a backup anyway in case it doesn't quite work as you expect.
One option might be to have Apple do it for you. I know the Genius Bar at Apple Stores will migrate people from PCs to Macs. They should do the same for old mac to new one. If you are near a store it might be worth a try. Just make an appointment and bring both Macs. Tell them your concerns and see if they will do it for you. I wouldn't be surprised...

Thanks. I have already been to the nearest store twice with the symptoms of the dying PB (iTunes stutters regardless of iTunes or Leopard versions, occasional kernel panics, and a dead hard drive that I have subsequently replaced).

I may well do what you suggest. Hopefully they won't try to sell me OneOnOne to do it.

    Thanks again.

The new MBP arrived Wednesday and I did the migration on Thursday. The iPhoto upgrade appears to have gone just fine, though I have thousands of faces to identify for the Faces function now.....

I have the same situation. Is there a way to only identify the select few faces you want to find?

You only need to identify the faces you want to. Just ignore the rest.

Hello there, I'm struggling with the same but from iBook G4 (with iLife 04) to MBA with iLife 11. Data and all photos migrates over fine, but photo library xml data doesn't go into iPhoto, I get a message saying library is not compatible and to run iPhoto Library Upgrader software, which I can't find anywhere. I'm currently facing a weekend reimporting all pics and remaking all my albums from scratch... Did you have to do similar?
