How Do I Assign Titles To a Large Batch Of Photos?

Hi, (apologies if this is a bit lengthy) I’m using a desktop Mac with High Sierra, and the latest Photos version. I want to copy 750 holiday photos onto a USB flash drive to share with a friend. I want to keep them in the order they were taken in. They were taken with two different cameras therefore the file names begin differently. When I copy them from Photos (where they are in order of when they were taken) they end up out of order on the flash drive (alphabetical I think). To get round this in the past I would just go to Batch Change, assign a title and Photos would give each photo a consecutive number (eg 1-750) and they would be sorted in the same way on the flash drive. That facility seems to be no more. Does anyone know how I can get around this? Thanks so much.

You can set the title of a batch of photos to the same thing. All you need to do is to select the photos, use Command+i to get info on them, then set the title of them in that info window. All of the selected photos are then set to the same thing. But it doesn't help you with numbering, as they all have exactly the same title, no number is assigned. I don't remember Photos or iPhoto ever having the native ability to do that.

Once you have them all with the same title, you can use File, Export and then select Use Title as the File Name in the File Naming section. Since they all have the same title, you'll get numbers added to the file names since they all can't have the same filename. I'm not sure of the ordering used for this, so you'll have to try it and report back.

But, an easier method may be to not set the titles of these photos at all, after all you may not want your 750 photos to be permanently titled the same thing in your library, and simply use the Sequential setting in File Name in the export settings. This will give you each with a number. But again, I'm not sure of the ordering. You may want to try to create an album of these 750 photos, if you don't have that already, and sort them by date, and then try selecting them and exporting. See if the numbering of the files then matches the ordering in the album.

Gary - thanks so much for such a quick response. I went with your second suggestion and …. it worked! What a genius.

I’d never used the Sequential setting before - I normally have that set to Use File Name

There’s no rhyme nor reason to the order they load onto the flash drive - it’s quite random which looked a bit worrying - but as they load they are slowly slotted into numerical order and once finished they are all perfect!

Once again thank you for your help.

When I do a title for several pictures, I add a # to the title, that way I can add a number manually.

I remember in iPhoto that it could add a number automatically if chosen.
