I have Keynote 7.3.1 and am trying to copy a picture that I pasted on a slide… but copy and paste will not work…. got any suggestions ???

Are you trying to copy the image and then paste it as a file in the Finder? That won't work because the Finder expects you to be pasting files, not image content.
So what you need to do is to paste it into an app that expects image content. The easiest way is to copy the image in Keynote. Then launch Preview. Then choose File, New from Clipboard. This will create a new document with the image you copied. Then save this image as a file.
