WE have a iPad 2nd edition and would like to transfer data to a newer 2017 model?

There are a few ways to do it. It depends on what you are using now. For instance, if you are using iCloud for everything, you really don't need to do much except turn on iCloud on your new iPad and everything will be there. But if you aren't using iCloud for everything, but have a computer with iTunes that you sync and backup your iPad to, then you can use that.

Basically, you backup your old iPad to iTunes on your computer just as you have been doing all along. Then you connect your new iPad to iTunes and restore that backup to the new iPad.

You can also do this directly from device to device, but that requires two iPads both being fairly new and running iOS 11. I'm not sure what you have -- if you have the "iPad 2" then that can't be running iOS 11. But if you mean something else like the iPad Air 2nd Generation or something like that, then you could use this.

The process is basically just following prompts as the device will walk you through it. But Apple has some more details here: Transfer content from your previous iOS device to your new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
