How Do You Avoid Keyboard Shortcut Conflicts?

Great tutorial on creating keyboard shortcuts I’ve just created one for the NEWFILE FROM CLIPBOARD menu item in BBEdit
But as I was doing so, I was wondering what happens if I choose a key combination that is the same was an existing combination for the application What about a global combo that conflicts with a single app’s? Etc.

Try it and you'll see. The previous shortcut is overridden.

For instance, as an example, in the Finder try to set the Rename command to Command+c. This will work, but not Copy has no shortcut assigned.
