How to stop the startup tone for the Mac

When starting up a Mac you get the startup tone (bong). Can I shut this off?

I haven't tried it with Lion, but typically you would lower the volume to nothing before shutting down to avoid hearing the sound when starting up.
You could also simply just not shut down. Sleep instead.

Yes sometimes its annoying, but to me when you hear this tone it gives you confidence that your Mac is starting up. If you turned the volume off, or put it to sleep. The next time you start up your Mac,and its all quiet your Mac might not come on for some reason. Example- Cable loose, but when you hear this tone, its more or less telling you every things OK on start up. Thats the way i look at it.

I had used the program (written about 5 years ago) to stop the start-up sound, but I think it is causing minor problems with Lion. Sometimes it would stop the sound and then other times it wouldn't and I've had problems with my RapidWeaver, so I just trashed the sound killer.
