How to tell native resolution?

Just watched Episode 580. At the end, you mentioned native resolution. How does one know which of the choices listed under the display menu is the native resolution?

What type of display do you have? Which make and model? It should have been on the box, or in the instructions, but you can look it up online.
For LCD displays, it should be the highest one listed (you generally can't go higher than native on an LCD).
