Right. There is no way to use invites in the Calendar app on the iPhone.

Wrong. There is a way. I don't know how it's done. But the company I work for provides us with iPhones. My boss was telling me that I should start using iCal for scheduling and inviting. So I started using it and asked him how to invite because I didn't see it on my phone. So he pulled up his iCal app and I did the same. His looked different from mine. Not greatly. Just that his had invites and mine did not. We just switched over to Verizon from AT&T to get unlimited data, and so we're all on the same level when it comes to the phones (all iPhone 4's). However, looking up about this, I saw one website saying that you have to have a MobileMe account to be able to invite people from iCal. I do not have a MobileMe account. I know that at one point my boss DID have a MobileMe account, but he no longer uses it (and hasn't for quite a while). But, if he had it set up before, and his phone was used to it before we switched over to Verizon, then I imagine when he synced the new Verizon phone with his iTunes account, it just transferred over the settings. Including the capability to invite people from iCal.

So, Gary Rosenzweig, you are incorrect. "There is no way." That's a little assumptive. Especially if you can physically look at a person inviting from iCal as I have seen with my own eyeballs. It is in fact possible, but it's not user friendly, and it isn't intuitive for everybody. It seems almost accidental, but yes there is a way.

So, what you are saying is that I'm not perfect? Oh no!
Perhaps your boss was using the MobileMe web interface? That's different than the Calendar app interface and would explain why you saw it and thought it was different than yours. So he was viewing MobileMe from the web, and you were using the Calendar app.
Cyrus mentioned that and so I assumed he wanted to do it from the Calendar app.

Bo is correct here, i have a mobile me account but hubby does not. I can invite people to an event using my ical app, hubby cannot. same app, different look and abilities.

Just go to settings and make sure your default calendar is set to iCal. Then it will use your iCloud account to send invites.
