iMovie 11 Sudden Crashing Problem

Yesterday I tried to finalise a project with iMovie 11 and it started finalising for about 20 mins (I bought my iMac only in Feb this year) and it suddenly froze and then I got that kind of sheer grey screen image drop down from the top of my screen (entire computer screen) and a message saying I had to restart my computer.
restarted my computer and reopened iMovie and tried to finalise the project. Same thing happened. I tried again, several times. Same thing happens every time.
Previously (back in Feb/March when I did my first and previous projects) I didn’t have any problems finalising projects in iMovie 11 – do you think it has anything to do with the automatic updates/upgrades? Someone suggested that I may need to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion for iMovie 11 to now work – is this true?
Thanks for all your assistance, much appreciated.

Hard to tell what could be causing that. I would suspect problem with one of the media files in the project before I would suspect something like a system update.
What happens when you try ti just Share the video? Does that work? And if so, why not just use that instead of "Finalize" -- I never use that function myself.

    Hi Gary

    Thanks for your reply.

I just tried the Share the video option three times (forgot earlier that I should have done that instead of finalise).

Same problem. Also, I opened a shorter video that I made a few months back that I had absolutely no problem "sharing" a few months back. That project does the same thing too now - crashes iMovie 11.

It sounds like something is wrong with that particular project, then. I'd duplicate it and experiment. What happens if you delete the second half of the duplicate project. Does it work (then the problem is in the second half). Continue to use logic to search for the part(s) that are causing the issue. Or, try to re-build the project, but Share after adding each piece so you can see exactly when the problem happens.

    Hi Gary

    Tried that and didn't work.

I got onto Apple and they got me to turn off the iMac and when I turned it to hit Command+Option+P+R and it fixed whatever the glitch was. It's sharing projects now.

Thanks for your assistance - always appreciated.

Interesting. That was a PRAM reset. I've never heard of a PRAM reset fixing an iMovie problem -- usually it is for system problems and such. I'll make a note of it. Thanks.

Just adding my thumbs up for SydneyGirl. The PRAM reset worked for me. My problem was: I would do a bunch of editing of a project in iMovie but then either (a) it would hang after making a change (some changes not others) or (b) hang when exiting. Sometimes it would keep the changes I had made. Other times not. Anyway, so far so good re the PRAM reset.

I recently started using imovie 11. I have a macbook pro, 6months old. iMovie crashes at times while I am editing a project. The crashes are intermittent, and I am not able pinpoint any particular reason. Clip goes black, sometimes a message pops up saying press space bar to view. IMovie crashes. Message asks me to submit report. I spoke to Apple care they told me they don't have an answer.
