importing casette camcorder video to iMovie

Hi. I’m stumped. i have some old Camcorder footage on cassette tape which I recorded onto DVD/RW with a Technics DVD Recorder using the A/V connections. The DVD recording shows as a UDF file when loaded on my macbook pro. I was wondering if there was a way of importing this to iMovie for editing…..I tried but the video format is unsupported……how do I convert the file to a recognized type for iMovie. Thanks

Have you tried MPEGStreamclip, FFMpegX or VLC? See episode 362:

Hi Gary and thanks for your reply. I tried VLC at the settings you suggested. It worked but the resulting video was very jerky and unwatchable even at the highest bitrate transcoding setting. I tried the other two apps you suggested.....Streamclip, I found the DVD video did not appear in the app window while playing and it said I needed to purchase something from Apple. The FFMpegX app apparently needed other components installed and the links to these other components, provided in the program did not work. Thanks for your help all the same.

OK I managed to find the missing components from FFMpegX. It wont convert from DVD video for copyright reasons tho. I give up lol.
    Cheers.
