Importing sounds into MacBook Pro

Hello all. I’m new to the world of Mac and loving it. My question is….Can I import sounds into my MacBook Pro? I would like to change the sounds for when it powers up, shuts down etc…
Thank you for all the help..

You mean you want to change the system alert sounds, right? You can do that by going to the Sounds preferences in System Preferences. You can add your own custom sounds to that list by putting them in ~/Library/Sounds. I think they need to be .aif format.
The startup sound is a special things, though. It happens before the OS is really loaded. So you can't change that.
Other programs, like Mail, have their own sound settings separate from the OS. The OS itself really doesn't have that many sounds, but you can use third-party applications like Growl and such to set sound alerts for a number of things that go on.
