In iTunes Can You Have Music and Video In Different Locations?

I have and like iTunes organizing my media with all my music stored on the local hard drive of my iMac. Conversely I have a bunch of videos stored on an external drive. Today I happened to add one of these videos to iTunes and I noticed that it made a copy of the movie from my external drive to my local drive. (A behavior that I expected it to but was hoping it wouldn’t.) Is there any way to setup iTunes to point to the local drive for music but to an external for movies?

You'll find these settings in iTunes, Preferences, Advanced. Uncheck "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" so it doesn't copy the video file when importing.

However, you can't make this automatic. You either have it on or off. I believe that it behaves the current setting when you add media. So try unchecking it when you want to add movies, and then checking it when you want to add music.

Possibly the only way to accomplish this would be to have separate iTunes libraries and have different settings applied to each library. One library could be on your internal storage drive and the other could be on your external. I haven't tried it but that would be my guess.
