My inbox in mail includes my sent items as well. Although they do have a dot indicating they are sent and they are in my sent items folder, how do I turn off so they only show in sent items folder.

It sounds like you may have an option turned on with your email provider to send a copy of all send email back to you. This is a common option as it allowed people using pre-IMAP systems to send email from a phone or laptop and then get a copy to save on their main computer.
You don't mention what type of email system you are using, but check in the control panel for that system to see if you have this option checked.
