I have a Time Capsule. It’s only USB port is occupied by my network printer. I want to add an external drive to the network, but I don’t want to give up my printer. I’m thinking of getting a USB hub so the external HD and printer can share the lone USB port on the Time Capsule, but my fear is that this will slow down my connection to the external HD. Is this a valid concern?

No, adding a USB hub shouldn't slow it down. USB is designed to work with such devices. Just make sure you get a powered USB hub (one that plugs into wall power) and make sure it is USB2 (all should be USB2 nowadays).
