MPEG2 import to iMovie

How come I’m able to import my MPEG2 files from my HDD camcorder Sony DCR-SR90E into imovie directly from the cam, but not if I have imported them to my MBP’s harddrive first, where I have to convert them into other formats to use them in iMovie?

My guess would be that the camera streams the video into iMovie. But when you just grab the files, you just get the files, which are incompatible until you convert them.

Thanks, Gary. Any idea why imovie isn't compatible with that particular format? I mean, it's a pretty common format, right?

Not necessarily. I think that particular exact format is only used by sony cameras. Which is why it is discussed so much in this context online. Don't be fooled by the file extension. .mp4 files can be one of many things. It is file "wrapper" that can contain any number of compression types.
