Depends on exactly which models you are comparing. Parts get cheaper over time as they are produced in mass. Apple finds ways to make manufacturing easier. They get better deals on parts as they buy larger quantities. Things like that.
Think of today's standard card with air bags, CD player, power steering, windows and locks, cruise control. Think of how much that would have cost 20 years ago, if you could even find it all.
