A lot of video on the Web, like at YouTube, is shown using the Flash browser plug-in. If something happened to that on your Mac, then it can be fixed by simply re-installing Flash. http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
But that doesn't explain why photos don't show up. You say they show up only some of the time? That's odd. Is there a consistency between cases where photos don't show up and where they do?

when I opened up a local newspaper site the place where pictures
or video links is blank. On ESPN I can see the video spot but when I click
on the arrow nothing happens. On youtube, when I click on the smaaler window for a video, a larger screen pops up but it's black.

Try re-installing Flash and see if it fixes it all.
And before you do that, just to make sure, you have tried restarting your browser, right?

I also opened up yahoo from the browser and when I click on a video
link the screen is blank where there should be a video block.

I quit safari and started it back up, works perfect. So simple and yet so easy for me to overlook. Thank you so much for taking the time to help me, God Bless.
