I’ve bought a new Imac running Lion and iLife 11 and I wish to bring over some iMovie 09 projects from my old Mac. Can Imovie 11 read the files? I have copied over a file with file type imovieproject but iMovie 11 doesn’t recognise it.

Yes, absolutely. You can open iMovie 09 projects in iMovie 11. But you don't "open" projects in iMovie. You need to place the project folder, and any events it uses, in the ~/Movies/iMovie Projects and ~/Movies/iMovie Events folders.
I put the events in the eventsfolder which imovie 11 shows. Did the same with the project, but imovie 11 does not show the project. Any suggestions?
Perhaps you didn't put it in the right spot? Create a new event and then mimic how that new event appears -- where and what the name looks like, etc.
