Forum Question: (Phone-less)iPhone push notifications not being received over Airport

Hey Gary, wondering if you heard anything like this… I had to turn my iPhone off, but I still use it like a Touch, anyway, when I am at home I have an Airport Extreme and I never get pushes. When I drive to work as soon as I get in range of wifi, I get all my pushes that I didn’t get over my home wifi. This basically happens everywhere but at home, public wifi, etc. So I am not sure if I need to forward a port or change something in my Airport settings. Thanks so much!

According to this article,, push notifications come over port 5223. So, perhaps, yes you have a firewall blocking that? Maybe not on your router, but from your ISP?

So Gary I forwarded that port on the Airport and my Actiontec modem and still nothing. In regards to the ISP comment, I have Qwest DSL and so does my work and my in-law’s house and it still work everywhere but at home. One difference is that I am the only one with an Airport, my work just has a modem with wireless that I use and my in-laws do the same. So I am still assuming that it is the Airport…

I’m using Qwest as well, with an Airport Extreme. But I’m not certain that I get push notifications through WiFi to begin with. They could be coming from the 3G network, even with WiFi connectivity turned on. Perhaps that is it? Perhaps we get them through 3G anyway, and the problem is with 3G/Edge coverage in your neighborhood?

Well I know it has nothing to do with my EDGE coverage because I have airplane mode on since my phone is shut off though AT&T. The only thing that is on is wifi, and as soon as I pull up to our building at work and my phone jumps on wifi, all my pushes come in. Sorry it’s weird,,,
