No. (I've answered this a few times in the forum previously).
You don't need MacKeeper. The stuff it does is either things Snow Leopard will do on its own, or you don't really need. Don't waste your money.

I downloaded MacKeeper from an ad on your site. I have uninstalled it since but is MacKeeper going to cause any harm, or anything annoying?

As far as I know it is a legitimate program that just isn't necessary. But it won't cause harm. And if you have uninstalled it, then it is gone anyway.

MacKeeper has been appearing as a pop up for about a week. does it mean my computer needs an updated anti virus etc? Which ones do you recommend?

What do you mean by "appearing as a pop up" -- you mean in your web browser as you surf to web sites? That just means the sites you go to are showing lots of those ads. It does not mean that you need anti-virus software.
