Two iTunes libraries?

I want to create some room on my hard drive. One way I thought of doing this is to transfer itunes from my mac’s HD to an external drive. I have seen your helpful video on this already. My question is this: is it possible to have an itunes on the mac for iphone syncing and another on an external drive for all the other stuff eg videos, music and other stuff that hogs the memory. I would hate the thought of losing my iphone content rather than podcasts which ca be replaced.

You can probably arrange for this to all work, but it would still be a pain to restart iTunes each time and switch libraries.
Instead, why not just move some of the content to the external drive?
