I watched your video on Handbrake, which I found helpful since I think Handbrake is rather intimidating to anyone not fluent in video. Most of the time, however I use RipIt from the Little AppFactory to make digital copies of dvds, both commercial and home-recorded, and have recently been using their “Compress” setting (Beta) to make iTunes compatible files. Have you used it? Any comments?

I haven't tried it. I just don't need to do this often enough to need to buy software to make it easier than Handbrake.
I just downloaded Handbrake. I tried ripping a DVD however it showed an error message as "This version of HandBrake is 64 bit, VLC found but not 64 bit!"
What do I need to do?

It looks like one reason you may get that is because the application isn't in /Applications
