What Are the .txt Email Logs For, and Are They Necessary?

I’m trying to clear up space on my hard drive, and came across a folder in the Users > myusername > Library > Containers > Mail > Data folder (there are a few other folders in the path after that as well).

There are 50 .txt files in there and I was surprised to see how large they are.

The .txt files are apparently logs for the mail app. My question is, do you know if it’s necessary to keep these? The folder containing these logs is 244 GB. My hard drive is only 1 TB so if I don’t need them I’d like to delete them, thank you!

I’m trying to clear up space on my hard drive. I’m wondering if the files are necessary because they are taking up a lot of space and I’m tired of always running out of space on my hard drive. Thank you!

First, switch off the option to keep these logs in the first place. At some point you must have turned it on. Could have been years ago, even on another Mac and carried over with Migration Assistant.

Launch Mail, and choose Window, Connection Doctor. Look for the check box next to Log Connection Activity. Switch that off.

Then you can click the Show Logs button right there as a quick way to get to the log files. You can then put them in the Trash and delete them.
