Oftentimes I don’t read my email in order. I could press and up arrow or a down arrow at the top of the message on iPad to go immediately to that message rather than return to the “index” of emails and then choose to go to next message. The arrows apparently disappeared with iOS10. Can I get them back?

The arrows are still there on it iPhone, but not the iPad. I think it makes sense: when viewing Mail vertically on the iPhone you can't see the messages list on the left, so a next/previous function is useful.
But on the iPad, you always see the messages on the left (horizontal), or bring them up by swiping (vertical) so you can just tap the next message, or jump to any one you want.
Am I the only one who uses the iPad in a vertical position, similar to a book?
Lynda: It is easier to type with the horizontal keyboard as it is closer to actual size. So I use Mail in horizontal orientation for that reason. You can still get that list of messages on the left with a simple swipe from the left side.
I never use my iPad horizontally when reading emails. It's easier for me to hold it on my lap vertically. I HATE this change. What might work for some people doesn't work for everybody. Stupid stupid stupid.
Bria, I couldn't agree with you more: the arrows were ALREADY THERE, why take them out??? As you say, we can add this DUMB change to other things like not showing the date at the top of the screen while you have apps running. And then Apple gets pissy when other developers try to hack them to improve upon they DUMB omissions or changes! Go figure...
If it wasn't broke, why did they have to fix it. A really dumb change!
At least give us the option to go back to what we had before! Like Lynda, I don't read emails in chronic order, and really used the up and down arrows a lot. Grrr!
Very frustrated to have lost the up-down arrows. There is plenty of room to restore them. I don't know why the programmers always feel compelled to change things just to suit their whims or just to change things. If people don't want to use the arrows they don't have to.
Like Bria, I only use my iPad vertically and like others, I skip over or save emails to deal with later. Losing the arrows is a huge nuisance and slows down cruising through email which was why I prefered to use my iPad.
Yes, people use email in portrait mode. Put the damn arrows back. Stupid move, Apple.
Please bring back the arrows in the email on iPad.
My husband and I both read our emails in the vertical position and it is so irritating to have to go back to the index to find the next mail when I don't delete the one I am reading. I can't understand why you would take this away. Please bring it back.
Please bring the arrows back, I use my iPad vertically also. It is things like this that has caused our company to love towards android based devises.
