New MacBook Pro Highlights WWDC Announcements

Apple announced and released a new version of the MacBook Pro this week, the biggest announcement at Monday’s Worldwide Developer Conference keynote. The new MacBook Pro is the first laptop to feature a retina display, similar to the new iPad. The new machine also comes with an SSD hard drive, no optical drive, HDMI output and a redesigned case featuring a new fan and battery system.
The rest of the MacBook line was given an incremental boost with new processors and memory. The 17-inch Macbook Pro was retired. The Mac Pro was also given a small incremental increase in power, but remains the only Mac without Thunderbolt support. Apple did add this week that new professional Macs will be coming in 2013.
In other news at the keynote, Apple revealed that the next version of OS X for Macs will come out in July. A new version of iOS is now in the hands of developers. iOS 6 will bring Siri support to new iPads, and Facebook integration, a new Maps app, and many other features.

No optical drive? What's up with that? Is Apple no longer going to support CDs & DVDs? How will we import songs into iTunes or burn pics & movies to CD or DVD? What am I missing here?

There's been no optical drive in the MacBook Airs, and none in the new minis either. With the new MacBook Pros, they just are too thin to have space for it. But for $79 you can get the external USB superdrive. Then you have the best of both worlds -- an optical drive when you want one, and the ability to travel without one.

Ok, but what if I want to travel with an optical drive? like watch a movie while on the go? or burn a CD/DVD to transfer archive files to someone? do I have to carry the external drive with me then? Talk about mobility... What's next? No USB?

If you want to watch a movie, do it without using the optical drive (rip the DVD before traveling, or rent from iTunes).
So if they included an optical drive, it would be a bigger machine. That would displease some people (like me, who wouldn't use the optical drive). By not including the drive, they are displeasing some people (like you). Those are the choices that need to be made. Can't have it both ways.
Apple has 5 years of experience with selling MacBook Airs without optical drives. So they have lots of information to help them decide.

I think you meant to say: Apple announced and "released"

No optical drive seems feasible to me. Everything I want or need comes straight off the Internet anyway. USB Drives have far bigger capacity than a DVD anyway these days and much easier to transport.
If you need an optical drive then the new Apples are not for you.

All of my photographic software is on CD, I have no choice but to get a SuperDrive...
