If you want to copy the current web browser URL, don’t use your cursor to select it. Instead, use Command+L and the address will be instantly selected. Then Command+C to copy. This tends to be much quicker and cleaner than selecting with the cursor because many URLs are so long.

hi Gary, when I press Command+L while I'm on a web page, it takes me to Launchpad, is this something that needs to be first set up in the Keyboard Shortcut Preferences? Actually I find that by just clicking within the browser address box the whole URL is automatically selected anyways. thx - Nick
Nick: By default there normally isn't a keyboard shortcut for LaunchPad. But you can create one. Maybe you did that? Check in System Preferences, Keyboard, Shortcuts, LaunchPad & Dock.
Gary: of course I should have checked that before commenting here...yes that was the shortcut assigned to LaunchPad, I unchecked it andCommand+L now selects the address. thx
