If one were to purchase a Magic Mouse, would there be any point in purchasing a Magic Trackpad at the same or in the near future ?
What I mean to say is, do they essentially perform the same functions, Therefore by having both there is no clear advantage.
Obviously if one had a MacBook only, then there would be no point in having a Magic Trackpad.
But if one were to own an iMac, would having both peripherals be a good thing or waste of money ?
kind regards….

Does the Magic Mouse & Magic Trackpad Essentiaally Perform the Same Functions ?

No. There is a huge advantage to having the Magic Trackpad: it supports ALL Lion gestures, just like a new MacBook would. A Mag Mouse only supports a limited set of special gestures.
I switched to using the Magic Trackpad when it came out. This had three advantages:
1. I could use all Lion gestures.
2. When switching between my desktop and MacBook I could use the same interface.
3. Takes up less space on my desk since I don't need room for mouse movement.
Ah so the trackpad which is incorporated into your new Macbook, is therefore similar to a Magic Trackpad, so their is no loss of functionality ?
So there is therefore no real reason to use the magic mouse or any mouse over the magic trackpad, other than those who actually like using a mouse - whether it be on desktop or macbook ?
I agree with that. The Magic Mouse's only advantage is that some people like a mouse.
Right. But also I was thinking mentally -- I don't need to switch between using a mouse and trackpad. I can just use a trackpad in both places.
Yes thats right so the transition from iMac to Macbook and vice versa is seamless :)
One final query do you enhance the functionality of the magictrackpad and the trackpad on the Macbook with Better Touch Tool or similar third party programs?
I don't. Don't have the need, really.
In the classes I teach for senior citizens, they consensus is the older folks find the track pad to sensitive and have returned it after purchase.

For some operations, it seems that the Magic Mouse provides greater precision and greater control than the Magic Trackpad. But, for the majority of interactions, I find that the Magic Trackpad works great, and I use it most of the time.
Surely there must be a way to decrease the sensitivity of the Magic Trackpad, thereby giving greater control ?
There is. You can change the Tracking Speed in the System Preferences.
There we are Magic !!! Now there is no reason not to have the same precision and control with the Magic Trackpad than with the Magic Mouse :)
