Photo Albums is where you store pictures on your iPhone. When you first open up the Photo Albums application, you get a list of the different albums available. Camera Roll will contain the pictures you have taken on your iPhone. Photo Library will contain all of the photos you have choosen to sync with your iPhone using iTunes.

iPhone Photo Albums
You will also see any other photo albums you have choosen to sync. To create a photo album, use iPhoto. Then, go to iTunes with your iPhone plugged in, select your iPhone and choose the Photos tab. You can select to have all of your photos and albums synced, or only a few. You can also use Smart Albums, that will have selections based on search criteria, such as the most recent photos.
iTunes Photos Tab
When you select an album to view from the Photo Albums page, you will be taken to a Photo Library page. This will show all the photos in the album, and allow you to scroll through it. You can also press a Play button at the bottom of the screen to start a slideshow.
iPhone Photo Library
If you press on a photo, you will be taken to a close view of that photo. You can now use arrows at the bottom of the screen to look at the next or previous picture. You can also press the Play button to start the slideshow. If you are looking at the Camera Roll, you will also see a Trash Can button that you can use to throw away the picture.
iPhone Photo Picture
At the bottom of the picture, in the left corner, is a small button that will bring up some more functions. You can choose to have the picture used as you iPhone wallpapge, you can email the photo, assign it to a contact, or send it to a Web Gallery that you had previous set up with your .Mac account and iPhoto.
iPhone Photo Functions

If you make it a habit of taking pictures of your friends and business contacts, and then assigning their pictures to contacts on your iPhone, you will soon have a good library of contact images. These will not only be used when you get a call on your iPhone from that person, but also in the iPhone and your Mac’s Mail program, and even iChat on your Mac.

how to create the iphone library in itunes? i really need to manage my albums in this iphone 3g. i just dont know how. need a clear step on how to do it. thanks.

  2. rosenz says:

The best way to do it is to create a new album in iPhoto called “iPhone” or something like that. Then put in it only the photos you want to transfer to your iPhone. Then set your iPhone in iTunes to sync only that album and nothing else.

    HI,
great tip, this one, but I have a query…
following a recent hard disc crash on my iMac, I have a photo library of 500 odds photos from before the crash. I’ve not been able to recover any data from the drive crash, so was wanting to transfer these photos back to iPhoto. Of course, iPhoto syncs with iPhone, but I’m not sure if it can sync these previous (not on camera roll) photos back into iPhoto. I’m currently emailing them one at a time back to my mail address… Is ther a faster and more efficient way to do this transfer? (I’ve also tried some apps like iPhonerip, but under the photo import setting, there is no info – ie, “0kb on disc”, when I know that I have photos stored…)
Hoping that this post is understandable, and that there is a solution…

please help i have the same problem!!!

      • One of the problems is that there are no full copies of these photos on your phone. They have been shrunk and compressed so they don’t take up too much space. So you can’t get your originals back, only small copies. And if you email them it is worse because they are compressed even more to be sent in an email. There are some programs out there that claim to be able to do this, but I’ve never used them. Do a Google search for it.
As for everyone else: This is why it is so critical that we all use Time Machine to back up. Your photos alone make it worth the cost of a hard drive.

JS: Have you thought about taking the phone to the Apple Store? Make an appointment at a Genius Bar and see if they can help. Otherwise, look for another 3rd-party solution since that one didn’t work. Keep in mind that emailed photos are smaller than the ones on the phone itself, so emailing might not be a good solution at all.
Another idea is to use the Preview app on your Mac. Open up Preview, plug in your iPhone, and choose File, Import Image.

JS: Have you found a solution to your problem? I have the exact same problem…accidently deleted all photos from my Mac and want to transfer the synced photos from my iphone back onto my computer but am afraid to loose them in a sync back…any thoughts or solutions??
    Thanks!!!

  6. Richard Owen says:

Hey not tried this but at least its a thought turn of the sync in itunes for the photos to make sure that it doesnt get deleted then plug your phone in and open up iphoto. My iphone appears in there as a camera and I can import the images in from there like a normal camera

  7. deepak says:

how can i implement iPhoto album in my iphone application, acutely i like to implement a slide show in my iphone application, but i have no idea about that, please guide me how can i do that.

  8. rosenz says:

deepak: An album is just a collection of photos. Create one in iPhoto and then in iTunes, while syncing your iPhone, select to sync that album under the iPhone photos. Then, to view it ias a slideshow in the iPhone, just view the album and press the “play” button.

Yes , all well and good … but what about windows users ????
No such thing as iPhoto in windows … is there ?

  10. se13311 says:

if you are windows users you can try “utunephoto” that can manipulate your photo albums or camera roll.

  11. B says:

I have taken some pictures straight onto the contact’s info and can’t seem to find where the picture is actually “stored.” I would like to use these pics for other things, posting, emailing etc. How do I access these photos to transfer them?

    -B

    • rosenz says:

They don’t appear in your “Camera Roll” as well? If not, then they may not be in a place you can easily access.

      • B says:

Nope not on the “Camera Roll” either. I’ll try Mac support. Note to self, take pictures of people using normal camera mode and then put them on contacts hehe.

  12. Lyn says:

I was wondering if it is possible to remove the Photo Library feature?

    • Remove it? You mean delete the app? You can’t delete the default iPhone apps. You can just put them on the last page of your apps if you like.

  13. Beef Stee says:

Can you do any of this pky hot iPhone cause I only have pics on my computer from my iPhone and they are all in one big photo album and I want to slipt them up can I to that with a windows computer?

    -BS

  14. cindee says:

any news on moving photos NOT in camera roll from the iphone 3g back onto a macpro computer?? all originals were lost…..please help!!!

    • You can always email them to yourself, though I believe the images get compressed when you do that. If they are critically important, I’d consult with an expert to get them off the phone in their original format.

  15. Hannah m says:

You could preview those photos and then press the sleep/wake and home buttons simultaneously which would take a photo of that photo an it would be saved in your camera roll?? I unfortunately have the same problem and I’ve had to either email them or use flikit or flikr
